This might get a bit long winded.

Let me start off by saying I haven't driven my car much, if at all in the last 2-3 months between bad weather and working alot.
I've noticed the last few months of driving or so I have a small puff of oil smoke right on cold starts. I'm chalking it up to valve seals possibly on their way out. Car doesn't really use or or burn any otherwise. 82k mile car.
I took it out for a 30-40 minute drive 3 weeks ago to stretch the legs. All was fine. Car was due for an oil change so I changed the oil (switched to 5W-30 from 5W-20, hoping the thicker oil helps with start-up puff issue). I needed to fix my rear upper control arm so I put the car on jack stands in my driveway where it sat for 3 weeks, and today I finally was able to finish.
As soon as I get the car started up today, oil puff as usual. I let it run for a minute and then happen to look at the dashboard, and see the CEL is on. Shut car off and see the codes are P0308 and P0316 (Misfire detected at startup). Car was running smooth, no issues at all. Cleared the codes and start it up again. No issues at all. I let it run in driveway for about 30-40 minutes and put in some Amsoil Performance Improver that I got awhile ago. Revved it up a few times in between. Still no codes. I'm planning on taking it out tomorrow morning and seeing if anything happens. I'm thinking an Italian tune up is in order.

Anyone recommend I do anything next to check or diagnose after I take it out? My blood kinda ran cold when I saw Cylinder 8. I just want to make sure its nothing major cause I'm not really in a position for internal engine work. I'm thinking may a little oil got the plug and burned itself off. Hopefully thats it.

Did the battery go dead at any point while it’s been sitting?

Dam, sorry to see that... Now you have to look at your options. Minimum rebuild or a gen 3 block. In the end, the price comes out pretty close but sooner or later we all get to the same place you are at now.

Done minimum rebuilds... I think those are for when you want to sell the car. Done forged rebuilds as well... waste of money and time. Would recomend the gen3 shortblock. Highest success rate!!

Yeah I’m gonna sit on it for awhile. I’m in no rush. I do a lot of my own work but I’ve never done a rebuild before. Learning on a car that I NEED to work when the motor is in is why I’m weary on that option lol. Shortblock seems easier. I don’t think I want to sell the car. If I sold it as is now I’ll take a bath on it, and that’s not worth it to me currently.

I’ll be doing my research here and there, what do I actually need to get a Gen 3 to work in my car?

Good luck, watching with interest.

I'm interested too. Soon I'll have the Gen 1 out of my wrecked ' 14 to transplant to my '13 project. To my knowledge it still runs fine but while it's out would be a great time to upgrade.

These coyotes are not that easy to rebuild well. Did a few simple engines before with success many years ago, but I would not want to do a Coyote myself. Have to look up the parts you need but am sure some one will chyme in before I dig them up, its straight forward enough though. My gen3 was a huge success and delighted by the power it puts out. Not a fan of the gen1 non Boss GT heads though. Think about where you want to take the car in the future... You can end up with 500rwhp with a little work. But maybe thats not where you want to go?

Honestly I never bought this car with a power goal in mind. I’m more on the safe/reliable set up side of things. Whatever set up I can do to be good long term is what I’d like to go with.

Sorry to hear that. I think I saw you post in one of the FB groups about this.
Mine just went out. Spent money on MCS and a lot of winter upgrades to find out I need an engine rebuild smh.
Gen 3 short block is the way. Really you could just replace the short block but it’s one of those things where since you have the engine out you might as well upgrade a few things which drives up the cost.

Yup. I’m kinda leaning that way. I just have to decide if I want to tackle this myself or have my tuner build it. I spoke with him yesterday to get a ball park on the labor and I want to die lol. Trying to do a little research now.

Getting a used Gen 1 engine from a junkyard or a Parts farm type place would probably be easier but I’m not sure if the risk is worth it. I’ll have no idea the condition of the engine and I can run into the same probably 6 months down the road for all I know.

Tell me about it. My mechanic gave me a quote and that night I watched several hours of videos on how to build a coyote lol. Helps if you have local car friends who are knowledgeable and have the garage space. Several cases of beer and a third (and fourth) hand for engine swap would be a great deal lol.

I thought about that but I think I would only consider that if I was doing the labor myself. Something goes wrong you are back to paying someone to swap it out/in again

Have you done it already? Or still deciding which direction you're going?

Lol oh no. It happened to me literally 2 weeks ago. Prepping for an upcoming track day and went for a spark plug change hoping to solve a P0308 code. My mechanic did compression test and it came back low.
I know I’m not going to build it myself. I already have the build sheet made and have been buying the lower cost items like GT350 primary chains for example. Hoping to have everything to take to my mechanic by end of summer so I can salvage some of this year.
